A Look at Bergamot Oil
Bergamot Essential Oil, produced in Calabria, Italy, is renowned for its superior quality. Originating from India, the Bergamot tree is believed to be a crossbreed of bitter orange and lemon. The small, green-yellow Bergamot fruit has a sour, bitter pulp and matures between December and March. The oil, extracted by cold-pressing the peel of the fruit, is a key ingredient in Eau de Cologne, along with neroli and lavender. Unique among citrus fruits, Bergamot is primarily grown for its essential oil.
Bergamot has been utilised since the inception of modern perfumery, especially in floral top notes to complement tea or citrus accords. It is also featured in the heart notes of woody or amber compositions, imparting a tangy, floral freshness. Bergamot Offers calming and sedative properties bringing cheerfulness and emotional balance, helping one to move forward. The furocoumarin-free (FCF) oil is produced by re-distilling the extracted essential oil, removing phototoxic furocoumarins and making the oil more suitable for topical applications.
